Learning to speak with another culture's language is a mind expanding experience. Deciding to speak a second language is one of the most rewarding challenges that you can undertake. Many countries now require their students to learn a second language in order to graduate from their high schools.

I wanted to experience another culture and had planned a trip to Germany. I wanted to learn to speak in the native tongue before making the trip. I also didn't have the time to attend a class, so I wanted a home study course.

One can find several courses that proclaim to teach a foreign language. How do you know which ones will deliver, and which ones won't? I put up this site in an effort to share my experience with anybody that is wanting to learn to speak German.

The Rocket German Website

The program I have reviewed is Rocket German™ which is produced by a company named Rocket Language Ltd. This course was written by a native German speaker by the name of Paul Weber. The company has an outstanding reputation for producing high quality language learning courses which include French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, and the American Sign Language.

The beginning module contains 31 audio lessons that will have you speaking some basic words after your first lesson. You will feel comfortable asking simple questions, receiving directions, ordering food etc.

The package includes the print transcripts of the audios and I found that to be a real plus. The first module is about 14 hours in length. This may seem like a long module, but I became so excited that I was learning so fast, that I just consumed this part of the course. I was learning and having a great time doing it!

The program also includes software. The first software application is what is called MegaVocab™. The use of this software is what made learning so easy, and more importantly, it was fun.

This is a vocabulary recognition tool. You basically run through a series of words and you learn the words through repetition, and an association with a picture. It's sort of like the flashcards you used to learn with when you were a kid.

The software has 2000 words and pictures built into it, but it also allows you to add more words and pictures of your choice as you decide to learn more and more words.

Once I started to learn the vocabulary I went on to the MegaAudio™ software. At this phase in the course is where I started to feel confident about all I had learned.

The software provides exercises that test and improve your recognition of the spoken words. The system provides a score and by referencing the score I was able to gauge my progress.

I found this software to be a lot of fun to use. I had a good time learning the vocabulary, but when I started to really understand it when spoken, I really got excited. I had a tough time trying to find another program that even offered this type of software.

This course is designed with the assumption that the student has no background in the language when starting. But it continues to an advanced level as well. I felt like this increased the value of the program because I wouldn't have to go out and buy a more advanced course as I progressed.

As a student of this course, I was given a free membership to the Rocket Language Online Forum. This is a really impressive part of this course. The members only forum is where you can ask questions and communicate with other students and the Rocket Language online instructors. To me, this forum made the cost of this course a real bargain. If you happen to get stuck on something, you find lots of help in the forum. I would be more than willing to pay a monthly fee to belong to this forum, but thankfully I don't have to. It's part of the course!

You are probably thinking that a course like this must be very expensive. The price of just under one hundred dollars for the downloaded version is a steal. The download was easy and I was able to watch it all on my computer, burn the material to a CD to listen in my car, and I even loaded audio on my ipod! If you prefer to have the course shipped to you on CD's, the company offers that option as well.

I think you will have a very hard time finding a more user friendly course. I am very pleased with the results I have had using this program and I am more than willing to recommend it. When I consider the quality of the course work, the software, the forum, the guarantee, and the bargain price, I can only give the Rocket German™ program our highest rating of 5 stars.
